Hull Buddhist Centre is a registered charity based in Hull, UK. We originate from the Sri Lanka Buddhist tradition which dates back to the 3rd century BC. when Buddhism was brought across the sea from India, where the Buddha taught. We are part of a network of Centres across the UK.
Our purpose
The main aim of the Centre’s residential teacher, Ven.Wimalajeewa’s, is to spread the practice of meditation far and wide, along with a deep understanding of the Dhamma, to benefit people everywhere.
A little about Buddhist meditation
Meditation, a practice originating in India over 3000 years ago, was revolutionised by the Buddha. He introduced a new type of meditation, Vipassana, which is shown to be far superior to other types. Vipassana, Mindfulness Meditation, helps one to live in the moment (not, for the moment), not getting depressed about the past or anxious about the future. Of late there has been tremendous worldwide interest, more so because of the ever-increasing scientific data showing the benefits of Mindfulness Meditation. You can learn authentic Theravada Buddhist meditation methods at Hull Buddhist Centre.
Activities
In Hull we provide religious advice based on Buddhism, and meditation training, and other types of service for people in our local community, irrespective of their personal religion or beliefs.
For Children
We hold a twice monthly Dhamma School (Sunday School), where the children learn about the Dhamma (Buddhist teachings) and meditation. At this early stage the children come mainly from the local Sri Lanka community but it is open to all children, so if you are interested in coming along with your child please contact our Centre.
Traditional Theravada celebrations
We celebrate many traditional Theravada ceremonies such as Vesak and Kathina, but the main purpose of the centre is always kept in mind.
